“K” Line ships to use low-sulfur fuel while docked in Pacific Northwest
Tokyo-based “K” Line said today that all of its vessels on the weekly transpacific NOWCO-A service, which calls at Tacoma, Wash., and Vancouver, British Columbia, will shift to distillate fuel with a target level of 0.5 percent sulfur or less, while docked at the Pacific Northwest ports. The Japanese carrier said it expects the move to reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions by 80 percent and particulate matter (PM) emission by 70 percent.
“The Puget Sound region is in compliance with federal air quality standards today,” said Timothy J. Farrell, Port of Tacoma's executive director. “As we continue to benefit from the growth of international trade, voluntary actions like “K” Line’s will ensure that our region continues to be a great place to work and a great place to live.”
