Karachi chamber lambasts port congestion surcharge The Karachi Chamber of Commerce is arguing that a port congestion surcharge being levied by lines serving the Port of Karachi is illegal and unnecessary given little congestion at the Pakistani port.
   At a meeting Wednesday with shipping agents and freight forwarders, the chamber conveyed its issues, saying it was detrimental to business and consumer prices, according to a report in the Daily Times of Pakistan.
   Muhammad Haroon Agar, vice president of the chamber, said, “99 percent of the shipping lines operating from Pakistan have deferred the levy of such surcharge but some companies are charging it, the story said. “He estimated 20 percent of the import merchandise is being subjected to surcharge.”
