Keller, Rooney look to chassis business

Two well-known container-shipping executives have teamed up and have made a proposal to take over operation of inland chassis pools.

Peter Keller, former president of NYK Line (North America) confirmed he and William Rooney, former president of Hanjin Shipping America, as Chassis Partners LLC, have made a proposal to the Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association (OCEMA), a U.S.-based association of 18 major ocean common carriers, and its Consolidated Chassis Management affiliate that operates chassis pools around the country.

Keller said the proposal only involved CCM’s inland pools, not those at seaports.

“We think it is viable and should be considered,” said Keller, but added the proposal was confidential and that he could not supply details.

Many container shipping companies have exited or reducing their involvement in the chassis business.

OCEMA members contribute both owned and leased equipment to CCM pools around the country. CCM has inland pools in Denver, Salt Lake City, Memphis, Nashville, Kansas City, St. Louis, Omaha, Chicago and the Ohio Valley.
