KLM, ALITALIA TO ADD FUEL SURCHARGE

KLM, ALITALIA TO ADD FUEL SURCHARGE

Alliance partners KLM Cargo and Alitalia Cargo say they will implement on
Feb. 1 a tariff surcharge of 10 cents per kilogram on all shipments to offset rising fuel
costs.
Analysts expect more carriers to follow. Fuel is an airline’s largest
expense after labor, and oil prices have soared this year.
The U.S. Air Transport Association, which represents all major U.S.
airlines, estimates that the average price of jet fuel paid by its members
has risen from 45 cents a gallon in January to above 65 cents per gallon in October.
