Korean Air adds freighter capacity

Korean Air Lines said this week it has ordered 10 Boeing-built freighters for delivery starting in 2009.

The Seoul-based carrier's order comprises five 747-8 and five 777-200 freighters.

According to a Bloomberg news report, Korean Air is adding the capacity to handle international shipments of mobile phones, microchips and other high-tech products made by Korean firms such as LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics Co.

'South Korean exports climbed 2.6 percent in the three months ended September,' the newswire said.

Korean Air also reportedly ordered 15 Boeing passenger planes, including 10 777-300s, four 737-900s and a 737-700. Bloomberg said Korean Air will increase its fleet from 118 planes to 137 planes by 2010.
