L.A.-Long Beach container volumes up

L.A.-Long Beach container volumes up    July container volumes at the ports of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach improved when compared to July 2009
   Los Angeles handled 369,389s TEU of loaded inbound containers in July, 21 percent more than in July 2009; and 146,369 TEUs of loaded outbound containers, a 6 percent increase.
   Long Beach handled 293,878 TEUs of loaded inbound containers in July, 33 percent more than in July 2009; and 126,177 TEUs of loaded outbound containers, up 16 percent.
   Both ports saw the number of empty containers handled soar. Los Angeles handled 214,988 empties, 62 percent more than in the same 2009 period, while Long Beach handled 167,826 a 63 percent jump. Carriers have been using special ships to reposition empty shipping containers back to the Far East because of a shortage of containers this year.
