LAN Cargo receives approval to start Colombian service

LAN Cargo, a subsidiary of Santiago, Chile-based LAN Airlines, has received approval from the Colombian government to establish a new cargo affiliate airline in that country.

LAN Cargo estimates that the operational and technical certification process in Colombia will take about six months, with a startup planned for the first quarter of 2009.

Colombia is the largest air cargo market in Latin America for exports to the United States, with an estimated volume of 200,000 tons per year.

LAN Cargo plans to deploy its Boeing 767-300 freighters in the Colombian market. The airline will also enhance its fleet with the arrival of two new B777 freighters during the first quarter of 2009.

The LAN Alliance of airlines serves 14 destinations in Chile, 12 destinations in Peru, 10 destinations in Argentina, two destinations in Ecuador, 15 destinations in other Latin American countries and the Caribbean, three destinations in the United States, two destinations in Europe and four destinations in the South Pacific, as well as 58 additional international destinations through its various code-share agreements. The LAN Alliance operates 72 passenger planes and nine freighters.
