Long Beach modifies cargo incentive program

Long Beach modifies cargo incentive program

The Port of Long Beach said it is modifying a cargo incentive program to help more carriers qualify for the incentives. The incentive is aimed at bringing more intermodal cargo to the port.

Under the program, ocean carriers are given an incentive of $20 for each additional TEU shipped through the Port of Long Beach from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2010, over and above the new baseline year, October 2008 through September 2009. The port said it modified the baseline year to more accurately reflect the recession's start — a move that it said would help more ocean carriers qualify for the incentive. The old base year had started on May 8, 2008.

The port also has an incentive measure for marine terminal operators, but it said that program has been effective and has not been modified.
