Long wait to load coal in Newcastle

About 55 ships are waiting to load coal off Newcastle, Australia, the world's largest coal export port, reports the local public radio station.

The Web site of ABC Newcastle said the long queues are expected to continue for several months.

The radio station said scheduled track work and the commissioning of a rail flyover caused the queue to lengthen in November.

It quotes the general manager of Port Waratah Coal Services as saying the average waiting time is about two weeks, and that the delays are likely to remain until about March.
