The move guarantees the projects — two related crossfield taxiway projects and six related gate projects that are part of a massive modernization program at LAX — will fall under the umbrella of the Los Angeles World Airports' 10-year Project Labor Agreement signed with the unions in 1999. LAWA is the city agency charged with managing and operating the city's four major airports, including LAX and LA/Ontario.
'Today’s action by the Board of Airport Commissioners will ensure a stable workforce, fair wages and working conditions, and employment of affected local residents during the upcoming construction of public works projects vital to the future of LAX and our region’s economy,' said City Airport Commissioner Joseph Aredas, who participated in the negotiations.
The inclusion of the upcoming modernization projects under the PLA was negotiated with the Los Angeles/Orange County Building and Construction Trades Council and their affiliated local unions, the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations), the Building and Construction Trades Council of California, and signatory craft unions.
The Airport Commission approval to extend the PLA to the modernization projects was a 'huge step toward continuing the partnership for growth, economy and quality,' said Richard Slawson, Los Angeles/Orange County Building & Construction Trades Council executive secretary.
The PLA covers the on-going $723-million interior renovation of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX.
