Lufthansa Cargo ratchets up fuel surcharge

Lufthansa Cargo said its fuel surcharge will increase another 0.05 euros to 0.35 euros per kilogram effective Oct. 25, due to the continuing rise in the price of jet fuel.

Lufthansa’s fuel surcharge index is used as a benchmark by many other airlines in determining how to set their own fuel surcharges.

The surcharge increases kick in automatically as the price of fuel reaches predetermined levels.

Two weeks ago Lufthansa raised its surcharge from 0.25 euros to 0.30 euros to compensate for fuel costs. In August, when fuel prices were wildly fluctuating, Lufthansa said it would defer any fuel surcharge increases. The policy quickly changed as prices started steadily increasing again.
