Lufthansa Cargo targets niche private customer market

The German cargo airline has begun offering individuals the ability to directly ship oversize baggage and bulky items that need urgent delivery or special handling.

Lufthansa Cargo is now offering individuals the ability to directly ship oversize baggage and bulky items that need urgent delivery or special handling.
The airline’s logistics subsidiary will arrange door-to-door transport of items such as souvenirs acquired on vacation, or antiques. The service is available at www.myaircargo.net and can be booked online, with full price transparency of customs and other fees.
The “myAirCargo” service is available between most European countries and the United States. The company said it plans to expand the service to other countries in the near future.
“We are occupying an innovative niche in the market between postal services and forwarders,” Lufthansa Cargo CEO Peter Gerber said.
The service offers value to people who in the past did not send their shipments overseas at all, had to pay more for excess baggage, or used slower modes of transportation, as well as forwarders or integrators, Lufthansa Cargo spokesman Michael Goentgens said.
