On Oct. 29, the service to Los Angeles will depart from Frankfurt every Tuesday and Saturday, with a stopover at Chicago O’Hare. The return flight from California will be made each Wednesday and Sunday, also via Chicago back to Frankfurt. The service is part of the German airline's newly announced winter schedule.
“Since the beginning of the year, the West coast of the USA has been experiencing substantial growth in freight volume and a corresponding customer demand for main deck capacities,” said Klaus Holler, Lufthansa Cargo’s area manager for the Americas, in a statement.
“We have, therefore, decided to serve Los Angeles on the winter timetable with our own freighters once again. In addition to the belly capacities at Lufthansa, a weekly capacity of around 180 tons is now available,” he said.
Other changes to its winter schedule include:
* One additional weekend flight to New York.
* Osaka service increased to a total of four frequencies per week.
* Seoul and Hong Kong each receive an additional weekly service.
* Increased capacity for Shanghai and Beijing, through its partnership with Air China.
* Belly capacity on Lufthansa passenger flights will be increased for cargo.
In addition, Lufthansa Cargo will offer belly space on two new passenger services to Calcutta in India and Cape Town in South Africa, starting Dec. 1.
The three-times-a-week service to Calcutta will use Airbus A340-300 planes and double the cargo carrier unit’s frequencies to the Indian city. “India is one of the most important and impressive growth markets in Asia. We already fly to Calcutta three times a week with freighters,” said Martin Schlingensiepen, head of area management Asia/Pacific at Lufthansa Cargo.
