Maersk Alabama pirate gets 34 years

The Somali pirate who was captured by the U.S. Navy in April 2009 after hijacking a U.S.-flag vessel and taking its captain hostage was sentenced in a Lower Manhattan courtroom Wednesday to almost 34 years in prison, according to news accounts.

Abdulwali Muse pled guilty last year to being part of an armed gang that took over the Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean and took Capt. Richard Phillips hostage for five days.

Navy snipers shot dead the other pirates and rescued Phillips from the lifeboat they were in.
