Maersk delays Australia peak season surcharge Maersk Line is delaying its planned southbound peak season surcharge of $140 per container on all cargo in the Europe and Middle East to Australia corridor from Aug. 1 to Sept. 1.
   The Aug. 15 implementation of a $250-per-TEU peak season surcharge for shipments from South Asia and the Indian subcontinent to Australia is unchanged.
   “The surcharge is a reflection of the significant extra costs related to operating a network scaled to cater to the peak demand,” Maersk said in a statement. “These range from providing additional capacity, increased storage costs and additional capacity to evacuate empty containers back to areas where they are in demand.'
   The Danish carrier said the increase in demand during the peak season represents 15 percent over the average annual utilization.
