Maersk denies shipping garbage to China

Maersk denies shipping garbage to China Maersk Line has denied that the company has ever shipped garbage to China, or any other illegal cargoes, in response to an article in the China Daily.
'Maersk Line will never willfully engage in the transport of cargoes banned in China, such as garbage,' Maersk's Chinese representative office said in a statement. 'To the best of our knowledge, based on the information provided by the shippers and consignees, we have not facilitated the import of cargo that is not allowed by international or Chinese import regulations.'
The Danish carrier added that its mammoth 'PS'-class ship 'Emma Maersk' was 'regretfully' singled out in the story, and in fact has only carried about 7,500 tons of recyclable materials to Chinese ports from October to mid-January, and not 200,000 tons as stated in the article.
'Maersk Line does — as most other shipping lines — carry waste paper, scrap metal, and other recyclable materials for Chinese importers. Should authorities suspect any wrongdoing, we are committed to cooperate fully with investigations,' Maersk said.
