The vessels are to be delivered in 2010 through 2012 and will be assigned to the trades between the East Coast of South America and Asia and Europe. Maersk said the 16 ships would be equipped with reefer plugs enabling them to carry a record 1,700 refrigerated containers each.
The Daewoo order quickly follows one for 18 4,500-TEU box ships from Hyundai Heavy Industries. The HHI ships are due for delivery in 2011 and 2012 and will enter the Sub-Saharan Africa trades.
Both sets of ships will be equipped with a waste heat recovery system that reuses excess heat from the exhaust to generate energy for propulsion or onboard electricity consumption in order to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
“We are very excited with this order and the opportunities these vessels will provide our customers in South America. We are confident that the vessels will enable us to continue to offer competitive container shipping based on a modern, economical, and environmentally friendly fleet,” said Senior Vice President Michel Deleuran, Maersk Line’s head of network and product.
