The Danish group has given the ships a declared capacity of 11,000 TEUs but they are believed to have a physical capacity of about 14,800 TEUs (for more details see the November American Shipper, pages 46-52). A.P. Moller-Maersk has eight of the ships on order for deployment in the Asia/Europe trade.
The shipyard has managed to maintain its two-month production run for the series, as the previous ship, “Estelle Maersk,” was named in October. This is quite an achievement considering the superstructure module of the latest ship was taken for use on the first in the series, “Emma Maersk,” after a fire swept through its accommodation deck during construction, destroying its wheelhouse and engine control room beyond repair.
The ships dimensions are 397 meters (1,302.5 feet) long, 56 meters (183.7 feet) wide and 30 meters (98.4 feet) deep. A 14-cylinder W'rtsil' RT-flex diesel engine produces 110,000 horsepower, giving a service speed of about 25 knots.
All of the ships in the series use a more environmentally friendly silicone paint to cover the hull below the waterline, designed to reduce water resistance and cut fuel consumption by 1,200 tons per year.
