Maersk names latest Emma Maersk sister
A.P. Moller-Maersk Monday named the fifth of its giant “PS” class containerships at its Odense Steel Shipyard in Lindo, Denmark.
The Ebba Maersk was named by Gunilla Nyman, wife of Anders Dahlvig, chief executive officer and president of Sweden’s IKEA Group.
The dimensions of the eight-ship series are 397 meters (1,302.5 feet) long, 56 meters (183.7 feet) wide and 30 meters (98.4 feet) deep. A 14-cylinder W'rtsil' RT-flex diesel engine produces 110,000 horsepower, giving a service speed of about 25 knots. Environmentally friendly silicone paint covers the hull of the vessels below the waterline, which Maersk said reduces water resistance and cuts fuel consumption by 1,200 tons per year.
The Danish group has given the series a declared capacity of 11,000 TEUs, although they are believed to have a physical capacity closer to 14,800 TEUs. All of the ships will be deployed in the Asia/Europe trade.
Meanwhile, A.P. Moller Singapore on Friday took delivery of the 6,500-TEU Maersk Seletar built at Hyundai Heavy Industries.
