The deal builds on existing contracts between the two companies covering operations and support. As a part of the new agreement, IBM will be responsible for providing integrated end-to-end facility management services, including managing a considerable part of A.P. Moller-Maersk’s business solutions and IT operations.
“This agreement will strengthen our business with a scalable and flexible infrastructure. It will also enable us to reduce costs significantly — building on IBM’s global delivery capability,” said Eivind Kolding, partner and head of the container business of A.P. Moller-Maersk.
Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM is no stranger to the shipping arena having bought Maersk Data, the IT arm of A.P. Moller-Maersk, at the end of 2004 and more recently establishing CMA CGM SYSTeMS, a 50-50 joint venture with French carrier CMA CGM. Safmarine Container Lines, another shipping line in the A.P. Moller-Maersk family, transferred its IT assets and resources to IBM towards the end of last year in a 10-year deal.
Jens Munch-Hansen, regional general manager, IBM Nordic, said: “We are committed to helping A.P. Moller-Maersk focus on their core business. This agreement will enable A.P. Moller-Maersk to enhance cost leadership and further improve their IT environment by taking advantage of our industry and technology knowledge and leading edge capabilities.”
