Maersk starts China/India service

Maersk starts China/India service    Maersk Line will start a service linking Shanghai and Chennai in mid-September, the Danish carrier said this week.
   The service, dubbed the Chennai Express, will have a rotation of Shanghai, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Port Klang, Chennai, Vishakhapatnam, Tanjung Pelepas and Shanghai. It will operate with four 2,900-TEU vessels.
   Rizwan Soomar, managing director of Maersk Line (India & Sri Lanka), said the service will target the strong growth in the auto and electronics sectors from the Far East to Southeast India.
   'This service will also be extremely reliable for consumer durables, personal care products and other transit-sensitive goods,' Soomar said. 'There has been a space constraint on this trade and the introduction of this service will ease of the capacity on this trade to a large extent.'
   The service is due to begin Sept. 14. Transit time from Shanghai to Chennai is 13 days.
