Maersk to raise transatlantic rates in Æ11    Maersk has announced general rate increases in 2011 for the transatlantic trade.
   The carrier said it intends to raise rates $300 per container on April 1 and another $300 on July 1, though it said the increase “are subject to change based on market conditions.” Another rate hike on Oct. 1 is “to be announced.”
   The GRI will cover all cargo moving from the United States and Canada to North Europe, the Mediterranean and Black Sea and vice versa. It applies to both dry and reefer boxes.
   “The outlook for the next year is dominated by increased cost of charter for vessels and a rise in the cost of servicing inland locations. Moreover, trade imbalances are expected to cast additional pressure on the cost of ensuring equipment availability,” the carrier said. “Because of these developments, we will have to implement a GRI during 2011 if we are to continue offering the reliability and expertise you expect of us on the transatlantic trade lanes.”
