Gilardoni most recently served as managing director of cargo at Brescia Airport. He also held senior management roles at DHL, including head of global operations performance, working extensively in Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
At Cargoitalia, he will be responsible for the airline's marketing and sales, network development, and the appointment of general sales agents, handling agents and other service partners.
Gilardoni joins other senior Cargoitalia management, including:
' Alcide Leali, chairman and chief executive officer.
' Giacomo Manzon, managing director.
' Stefano Barcone, industry director.
' Gabriele Cori, chief financial officer.
' Angelo Boscolo, flight operations.
' Danilo Zenari, maintenance.
'Italian air cargo has gone through a turbulent period, but the launch of the new Cargoitalia restores long-awaited Italian-owned pure-freight capacity to the market,' Gilardoni said in a statement.
Cargoitalia is about to take delivery of its first MD-11 freighter, which will commence operations in late May, flying twice weekly in a route that includes Milan, New York, Toronto, Milan, Abu Dhabi and Milan. Two more MD-11 freighters are scheduled for delivery later this year.
The new Cargoitalia is the result of amalgamating the original Cargoitalia, which suspended operations in 2008, with the recently purchased Alitalia full cargo business. Cargoitalia's new owners are Aerolinee Italiane S.p.A. (66.7 percent) and Intesa SanPaolo (33.3 percent). Aerolinee Italiane in turn is owned by the Leali family (62 percent), other private investors (8 percent), and Ricera S.p.A. (Benetton), Selin S.p.A. (van den Heuvel) and Banca Intermobiliare, each having 10 percent stakes.
