MarAd installs solar power at Beaumont fleet site

The U.S. Maritime Administration has installed a solar power system at its National Defense Reserve Fleet site in Beaumont, Texas.

The solar photovoltaic system is a 52-panel, 10.4-kilowatt unit with an annual production capacity of more than 12,000 kilowatt hours. MarAd said the system should prevent the emission of more than 700,000 pounds of carbon dioxide over its expected 30-year service life.

The agency plans to continue its “Going Green” initiative at other fleet sites and field offices in Houston; Miami; San Francisco; New York; New Orleans; St. Louis; Chicago; Long Beach, Calif.; and Norfolk, Va.; and at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.
