Maritime Administrator calls for port investment

Helping U.S. ports overcome congestion problems is one of the goals of new Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton.

In remarks to alumni of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Wednesday evening, Connaughton vowed that MarAd would play a bigger role in encouraging investment in port infrastructure.

He noted that over the next 15 years, cargo volumes at U.S. ports are forecast to double, even quadruple according to some studies.

A 1983 graduate of the Kings Point, Connaughton is an attorney and, before joining MarAd, served as a county executive in Virginia — a job that has helped him appreciate that “if you don’t invest in new infrastructure you are going to end up with gridlock.”
