Marseilles-Fos box volumes down 3% after 10 months

Container traffic volumes at the port of Marseilles-Fos declined 3 percent in the January-October period to 760,000 TEUs, when compared to the same 10-month period last year.

Throughput at the Fos terminals, which handle east/west container services, was down 1 percent to 501,000 TEUs, while the Marseilles eastern harbor area slipped 6 percent to 259,000 TEUs.

Total port traffic for the first 10 months, including bulk cargoes, was up 2.4 percent to 80.4 million tons.

In a separate development, Guy Janin has been appointed as the new director-general of the Port of Marseilles Authority, replacing Eric Brassart who stepped down in October following a sympathy strike by the port’s CGT union members opposing plans to privatize the state-owned ferry operator SNCM.

Janin was head of the inland waterways authority Voies Navigables de France.
