Marseilles-Fos breaks 1 million-TEU barrier
Container throughput at Marseilles-Fos in 2007 handled 1 million TEUs in 2007, the first time the French port has passed that milestone.
The port’s preliminary figures show a 6.5 percent container increase over the 941,000 TEUs handled in 2006. Roll-on/roll-off traffic gained 6 percent in 2007 to 4.3 million tons. However, Marseilles-Fos’ total cargo throughput for last year slipped 3.7 percent to 96.3 million tons due to lower dry bulk and oil volumes.
The port said it expects a return to overall growth in 2008 with a predicted total cargo volume of about 102 million tons.
