Marseilles still bucks trend

The Port of Marseilles-Fos saw container traffic rise 5 percent in the first nine months of 2009, boosted primarily by a 25 percent rise in deep-sea long-haul volume.

The port's Fos deep-sea terminal handled 420,000 TEUs during the period, a 25 percent increase on the previous year. But dwindling intra-Europe traffic into the port meant the overall gain was minimized. For the nine months, the port handled 660,000 TEUs.

By tonnage, 60 percent of Marseille's volume is container cargo, but steep drops in other cargo categories resulted in a 15 percent drop in tonnage through September, to 61.7 million tons.
