MDOT awaits CSX train re-route plan

The Maryland Department of Transportation said it expects to receive a briefing from CSX Corp. by late October on how the railroad plans to re-route some of its trains around Baltimore's aging Howard Street Tunnel, according to a Sept. 22 report by the Associated Press.

The 1.7 mile subterranean route has been the subject of debate among state and national lawmakers after CSX experienced a freight car fire inside the tunnel in 2001.

The AP said CSX is also expected to provide Maryland transportation officials with details about how the railroad plans to eliminate obstacles to double-stack rail transport within the state as part of its National Gateway initiative.
