Mega-shipyards planned in India by 2010
India is aiming to build a shipyard on its eastern coast that could compete with shipbuilding and repair yards in East Asia, the Times of India reported Friday.
Currently, Indian yards can build ship up to 110,000 deadweight tons, but the new shipyard would be able to handle ships up to 300,000 dwt. The government expects to have such a shipyard in place by 2010, the report said.
Another similar shipyard is expected to be built on the country's West Coast in Mumbai.
Two foreign companies and seven Indian companies are vying to build the yard, which would cost at least $700 million.
