Moffatt & Nichol lands S.C. naval station contract

Moffatt & Nichol lands S.C. naval station contract Long Beach, Calif.-based engineering firm Moffatt & Nichol has been hired by Sauer Inc. to provide marine structural engineering services for the Naval Weapons Station Charleston in South Carolina, the company said Tuesday.
   The facility serves as an ordnance station with capacity for more than 60 million pounds of conventional ordnance, a training center, a U.S. Army logistics hub, and is the busiest surface port in the defense transportation system in the continental United States. The design-build project will include a variety of repairs, replacements and upgrades for two separate docking facilities at the station – the transportation command dock and the wharf.
   For the dock, Moffatt & Nichol will provide a structural evaluation and prepare plans and technical specifications for the fixtures and structures needed to anchor an oil boom system. The company will also perform a structural evaluation on the wharf and prepare plans and technical specifications to repair deficiencies, including chipped and cracked concrete and deteriorating reinforcements.
