MOL conducts in-house safe ship operation sessions

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Tuesday said it has implemented in-house sessions called 'Safe Ship Operation: Learning from Incidents,' part of a company-wide effort to reinforce safe operation management systems.

In six sessions this month, the company will focus on safety lessons learned from previous incidents.

'The goal is to cultivate an environment that encourages a coordinated approach to improving safety,' MOL said in a statement.

A captain and chief engineer with extensive marine experience direct the workshops, which mainly target young, shore-based employees involved in ship operation. The lecturers explain the background and causes of various incidents and near-miss cases, and help employees in charge of practical operations recognize risks and decide what to do and what not to do.

'MOL believes it is essential to review safe operation from different viewpoints,' the company said. 'The company plans to implement in-house safety sessions from various perspectives.'
