Montreal sees volume grow in first half

Montreal Port Authority said its container terminals said it handled 725,283 TEU in the first half of 2008, 7.9 percent more than in the first half of 2007.

“This growth confirms that the Port of Montreal was able to make the most of the structural advantages it enjoys, namely its location in the very heart of the continent, its direct link to two international railway companies, and its geographical position guaranteeing it the shortest routes between Europe and North America,” said Patrice M. Pelletier, president and chief executive officer of the Montreal Port Authority. “It is through a very pro-active partnership with its commercial and operating partners that this success has been achieved.”

The port said it had strong growth than any port it views as a major competitor on the East Coast.
