More ships calling at New Orleans, Crowley reopens office

The Port of New Orleans said Monday that business is growing in the wake of Hurricane Katrina with 14 vessels, including four container ships, scheduled to call this week. Last week nine ships called at the port.

CP Ships and Mediterranean Shipping Co. plan to bring two container ships each into the port in the next seven days.

“We’re progressing each and every week,” said Gary LaGrange, port president and chief executive officer. “The 14 vessels that we are handling this week represent about 35 percent of our pre-Katrina ship traffic.'

At the same time, Crowley Maritime Corp. said it has reopened its New Orleans office following an all clear from local and federal authorities.

Crowley's office located approximately seven and a half miles from downtown New Orleans, did not sustain any flood damage. The telephone number the office is: (504) 831 8252.
