MSC assesses Chennai congestion fee
Liner carrier Mediterranean Shipping Co. said last week it will implement a congestion surcharge on shipments from Asia to the Indian port of Chennai.
The fee, effective Sept. 1, is $75 per 20-foot container and $100 per 40-foot container. A trucker strike over access to terminals in Chennai — India's second-biggest container port and its biggest East Coast container gateway — has caused cargo backlogs at the expanding port.
Also, MSC said it will begin assessing a 9.8 euros fee per container arriving at or leaving the Greek port of Piraeus on or after Sept. 15 due to the port introduction of an International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) fee.
