MSC low-water surcharge on Amazon

MSC low-water surcharge on Amazon    Liner carrier Mediterranean Shipping Co. said Wednesday it will begin assessing a surcharge for shipments to Manaus, Brazil, due to low water levels in the Amazon River.
   'The water level in the Amazon River has reduced considerably in the last few weeks and the situation is getting worse,' MSC said. 'In view of this, we are forced to limit our draft in reducing the intake capacity of vessels by 40 percent.'
   The low-water surcharge is $500 per TEU and goes into effect Nov. 1.
   MSC has recently introduced similar low water surcharges on lanes involving the St. Lawrence and Rhine rivers in North America and Europe, respectively.
   Maersk earlier this week implemented an emergency draft surcharge to Manaus of $500 per TEU.
