MSC will stay with Port of Virginia

Mediterranean Shipping Co., a major ocean carrier and logistics company, has affirmed its longstanding relationship with the Port of Virginia, and denied reports last week that it was leaving.

'Virginia International Terminals (VIT) has confirmed with officials from MSC in Geneva that the company has no intention to pull out of Virginia,' said Joe Dorto, VIT's general manager. 'In fact, VIT and MSC have been negotiating a long-term contract that would keep its ships calling here for many years to come.'

The Maryland Port Administration told Shippers' NewsWire it had put out a news release Jan. 5 saying MSC was dropping the Port of Virginia from its North Atlantic rotation. The Maryland port said the story came from MSC.

A source at the carrier said a miscommunication had occurred. The erroneous report was published in some Maryland newspapers and shipping journals.
