The Continental United States Freight Management program was created in 1988. In recent years, the program office’s focus has moved away from domestic shipments to include international air freight express shipments of under 150 pounds.
“The name ‘global’ just makes sense,” said Lt. Col. Henry Abercrombie, product manager of MTMC’s Global Freight Management program, based in Alexandria, Va. “With the growth of the Web, we can be accessed from all over the world.”
The 13-year-old program is credited with development of the Army’s first automated transportation offices’ freight movement system with prepayment audit capability. The system originally allowed transportation offices to obtain specific freight carrier tenders via modem — ranked by cost.
The system transitioned to the Web in 1998. The newer version includes a spot bid bulletin board posting which allowed carriers to submit a one-time all-inclusive bid.
