Napolitano looks to cut fat from DHS

   The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday it has begun to target low-hanging cost savings during the first 30 days of Secretary Janet Napolitano’s efficiency initiative.
   Efforts underway so far include increased use of conference calls, and Web-based training and meetings to replace non-mission critical travel, and consolidating subscriptions to professional publications and newspapers.
   DHS is also working to maximize the use of government office space and facilities for meetings, conferences and training instead of renting private facilities. And it is minimizing the printing and distribution of reports and documents that can be sent electronically or posted online.
   The department expects to save more than $40,000 by printing fewer copies of fiscal year 2010 budget materials, posting budget materials online and hosting budget rollout events at a government facility.
   Larger cost saving efforts will be initiated in the next 90 days, according to DHS.
