New Chennai terminal to open soon

The first phase of the newest container terminal at the Port of Chennai, India’s-second largest port, is due to open this month.

PSA International will operate the terminal in a joint venture between the Singapore-based terminal operator and Indian logistics company Sical.

The PSA terminal will eventually have more than 800 meters of berth and will add 1.5 million TEUs of capacity to Chennai, the country's busiest East Coast container gateway. The existing terminal at Chennai, operated by DP World, handled 1.14 million TEUs in the fiscal year ending March 31, a marginal increase over the previous year.

A major deepwater terminal project is also on the drawing board for Chennai, one that could potentially take the port's capacity past 10 million TEUs.
