NEW COLITION TO SEEK MAJOR ROLE IN INFRASTRUCTURE POLICIES    “Waterways Work”, a new coalition of ports, terminals, shipyards, agricultural interests and barge lines, has been formed to play a major role in the U.S. government’s drive to mold an integrated transportation system to accommodate a huge trade boom over the next 20 years.
   The organization will work closely with the American Association of Port Authorities and the National Waterways Conference and other groups promoting U.S. ports and waterways.
   The organization will embark on a political and public education drive to sell the inland and coastal waterways as an alternative to congested highway and rail transportation.
The group will stress the need to make infrastructure improvements. Much of the current waterway infrastructure is over 50 year old. This must be upgraded to reduce bottlenecks and enhance the efficiency of the entire waterway system, the coalition said.
   Waterways Work is headed by Dennis Kirwin, who is being assisted by the Jones Walaker law firm and the Livingston Group.
