New container terminal dedicated in Shanghai

Officials at the Port of Shanghai Friday dedicated a major new container terminal for the fast-growing Chinese port.

Shanghai Mingdong Container Terminals Limited Phase V is a 50-50 joint venture between Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. Ltd. (SIPG) and Hutchison Ports Waigaoqiao Ltd., a subsidiary of the HPH Group. The SMCT has four deepwater container berths.

SMCT is located at the Yangtze estuary near Wu Hao Gou, approximately 50 nautical miles from Yangtze anchorage and 110 nautical miles from Yangshan Deep-water Port, providing the shortest navigation channel for ocean-going vessels. SMCT said the facility has excellent road infrastructure connections that allow easy access to the terminals.

The new container facility has 12 super-post-Panamax cranes, including one with a 40-foot lift spreader capable of lifting 80 tons — the first of its kind in China.

In addition to the four deepwater berths, there are two additional berths designed for feeder vessels used for transshipments at the port.
