New LNG player to enter California race    Australian oil giant Woodside has said it will attempt to build a liquefied natural gas receiving terminal somewhere off the Southern California coast, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
   The proposed project would be the fourth such terminal to be planned for the region (one is being developed in the Port of Long Beach and two others an hour north in Ventura), but the Woodside project would allegedly differ in that the LNG would be converted from liquid state to gas 15 miles offshore.
   The current three proposals would call on the LNG to be converted either on the mainland or offshore, but closer to the coast. The Long Beach proposal has come under heavy criticism from local activists who worry about the safety of converting liquid methane to gas so close to critical container and petroleum terminals in the port.
