New plastic pallet pool operator nets first shipper customer

New plastic pallet pool operator nets first shipper customer Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS), an operator of the world’s first all radio-frequency identification tagged plastic pallet pool, has reached an agreement with a large Arizona-based produce shipper to test its technology during the winter of 2006-2007.
“The logistics and supply chain infrastructure we have built with our partners since launching iGPS in March is already capable of handling delivery of perishable items which are extremely time-sensitive,” said Bob Moore, chief executive officer for iGPS, in a statement.
“iGPS pallets offer many advantages over traditional wood pallets, including light weight at 47 pounds, greater durability, and a consistent 48-inch by 40-inch top deck, all of which could lead to significant shipping efficiencies,” said Paul Fleming, vice president of marketing and business development for Martori Farms in Scottsdale.
“At a time when the produce industry is adopting greater automation and information technology across its supply chain, the RFID capability of the pallets was also a draw,” Fleming said. Martori is a major supplier of melons and broccoli to supermarkets across the country.
iGPS is based in Orlando, Fla. and has operations in Dallas. For more details about the company’s origins, read the June American Shipper, page 42.
