The tool, dubbed E2, is aimed at enabling ship owners to maximize the gains in energy efficiency and emission reduction through proper use of the International Maritime Organization’s Ship Energy Efficiency Monitoring Plan (SEEMP).
“We hear a lot about energy saving devices which can be fitted and operational savings which can be made, but in our experience ship owners do not know which measures provide the best savings simply because they don’t have the right information to base decisions on,” said Claude Andreau, head of engineering at Tecnitas. “E2 solves that problem by collecting and evaluating all the information needed to make energy saving decisions.”
The tool can be used initially for ship acquisitions to monitor, measure and record actual consumption on board in a variety of different cargo and navigation conditions. Two additional modes, simulation and benchmarking, are designed to help ship owners’ or charterers’ operational management.
The current version of E2 is based on manual acquisition of input data, such as the fuel consumption recorded onboard. Development work is underway on an upgrade that would acquire the inputs automatically through flow meters and GPS. – Eric Johnson
