New terminal planned in Nova Scotia

New terminal planned in Nova Scotia

A consortium plans to build a $300 million container terminal on Nova Scotia’s eastern shore along the Strait of Canso, about 130 miles north of Halifax, Canadian newspapers and broadcasters report.

The terminal would vie for not only Canadian cargo, but for U.S. cargo with other East Coast ports from Halifax to Norfolk.

The Melford International Terminal aims to attract what it expects will be a boom in transSuez cargo.

The Halifax Chronicle Herald reports that that Trident Holdings Inc. is a leading investor in the project which might begin operating in 2010.
