New World Alliance, CMA CGM boost Asia/U.S. East Coast capacity

   Later than planned, New World Alliance carriers APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine and MOL, together with service partner CMA CGM, are set to resume weekly sailings on their joint Asia/U.S. East Coast service.
   The service — marketed by the New World lines as the East Coast Savannah Express (ESX) and by CMA CGM as SAX — switched to a fortnightly pattern in mid-December and was due to revert back to a weekly frequency by the end of March.
   The upgrade effectively doubles the service's capacity so that now eight vessels averaging 4,800 TEUs will call Ningbo; Shanghai; Chiwan; Hong Kong; Manzanillo, Panama; Savannah, Ga.; New York, N.Y.; Norfolk, Va; and Ningbo again.
   The Asia/U.S. East Coast trade is due another boost in vessel capacity as the CKYH Alliance — COSCO Container Lines, 'K' Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin Shipping — will next week restart their AWE-5 Central service that was suspended at the end of last year.
