NIT League to shed light on rail bill

The National Industrial Transportation League said it will hold a free briefing webinar at 4 p.m., Thursday on the Surface Transportation Board Authorization Act of 2009, also referred to as the rail competition bill.

The 90-minute webinar, which is open to NIT League members only, will review the bill section by section and provide members the opportunity to ask questions, the league said in an announcement.

The webinar's timing has been scheduled to cover all possible amendments that may be included in the bill when it is introduced by the Senate Tuesday. The briefing will also consider which changes may be included in the Senate Commerce Committee's mark-up vote scheduled for Thursday morning.

Gatti

Peter Gatti, NIT League's executive vice president, said shippers should pay close attention to the rail competition bill. 'This is historic landmark legislation, the likes of which has not been seen in 30 years since the Staggers Act,' he told American Shipper.

The league plans to hold a Rail Transportation Committee meeting in early January to discuss and possibly formulate a recommendation on the legislation, Gatti said.
