NOLA opens bridge over Industrial Canal

Port of New Orleans said the Florida Avenue Bridge over the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal (Industrial Canal) has reopened to vehicular traffic.

The bridge had been closed since Hurricane Gustav last summer inundated the vehicular safety systems that lower gate arms when the bridge is placed in its upright position. Since Gustav, the port's bridge operators have left the bridge in the upright position, open to marine traffic but closed to vehicular traffic. Port bridge operators were using auxiliary equipment to lower the bridge to accommodate rail traffic crossing the bridge.

With $120,000 worth of repairs made to the bridge, it is now safe for vehicular traffic and will be raised and lowered 24 hours a day, seven days a week to accommodate marine, rail and vehicular traffic.
