Nor’easter flooding roads, forcing flight cancellations

Nor’easter flooding roads, forcing flight cancellations A strong nor’easter that blew into the New York region over the weekend forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights at area airports and resulted in multiple road closures.
In New Jersey, Acting Gov. Richard Codey today signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency in New Jersey. Codey has stepped into the shoes of Gov. Jon Corzine, who has been hospitalized following severe injuries in an automobile accident last Thursday.
While most mass transit and major roadways including the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway are operational, some secondary roads around the region are flooded.
More than 5.5 inches of rain fell in the New York region Sunday.
Sunday was the second-wettest day on record for Central Park, the National Weather Service said, where 7.5 inches had fallen by midnight Sunday.
Airlines canceled more than 500 flights at the New York area’s three major airports, said a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Flights were also canceled in Philadelphia, Boston and elsewhere in New England.
There were sustained winds of 30 to 35 mph and gusts of up to 48 mph at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
At New York Container Terminal Chief Executive Jim Devine said his facility had sustained no damage over the weekend and expected to be able to work ships today.
